Developing Leaders to facilitate organisational effectiveness.

(TO FACILITATE WORKERS’ PERFORMANCE IN BUSINESS ORGANISATION)

Abstract – The knowledge of transformational and charismatic leadership provides insight about the nature of effective leadership. Nevertheless, most of the theories are also tied with conceptual weaknesses which reduce their ability to explain effective leadership.

An immediate distinction must be made, however, between leadership development and management development. Literatures between the two areas are similar and do relate, but there are several key differences. Just as leadership and management are different (but interrelated) concepts (Yukl, 1998), their respective development has its own unique importance. Management development primarily includes managerial education and training (Latham & Seijts, 1998), and with an emphasis on acquiring specific types of knowledge, skills, and abilities to enhance task performance in management roles (Mailick et al., 1998). Another characteristic feature of management development is the application of proven solutions to known problems, which gives it mainly a training orientation (Wexly & Baldwin, 1986).
